As part of a research trip to Germany and Switzerland in the fall of 2008, I visited MFO Park just outside of Zurich, Switzerland. The project is a large outdoor room defined by an industrial framework covered in vines. Massive green facades create a volume that is part-building and part-park, functioning as a cohesive element in the surrounding urban form and a gathering and event space for the surrounding neighborhoods. Beyond the impressive scale and design detailing of the project, I was also really impressed by its use of a wide diversity of plant material. An informal study by my colleagues on the trip noted over 20 different species of vines that created a richness to the project, and changing seasonal displays.
